Well, there are several things that cats do that dogs do not do. Most prominently, a cat will take care of itsself if you leave it alone for a few days (3-5) with enough food and water and a clean litter box. A dog will make a mess of things if left in the same situation. A cat will scratch on stuff like bedding, leather couches, curtains, etc ... but if it has a scratching post or scratch board with catnip on it, destructive scratching can be curtailed. A cat will not chew up wood furniture. They do not bark loudly, but some cats do let out annoying orations that sound like an exaggerated groan from a child with a tummy ache.
Cats have their own agenda. They aren't likely to walk on a leash very happily and they don't usually fetch, but they can be taught most any trick that a dog can do. My current cat goes to the door when she wants to go out just like my dog. She also meows at the door when she wants back in.
A happy dog is contagious, as is a happy cat, but there is nothing more relaxing to me than the sound of a purring cat or kitten.
