A warthog is essentially a wild pig so when a warthog is relaxed and contented, eating, digging around in the dirt or wallowing in mud, it makes a grunting noise much like a pig. When it is alarmed and senses danger, it will make a higher pitched squealing noise - particularly the younger ones. They are often chased by lions and again will squeal as they run to escape with their tails erect.
