I'm going through the same problem, one of my best friends cat has died and she is really upset. What you should do is tell her how sorry you are and try to comfort her in a way the fills the gap she has from losing his/her pet. Most people think of pets as part of the family and it is hard to adjust to life without them. If you are close tell her she can contact you when she needs to if she gets upset.
