The Calgary Zoo has announced the contest-winning names of two baby tigers: Samkha and Vasili.
Samkha means "sacred," the zoo reports. As well, the letters represent the name of their grandfather, a past zoo resident, male tiger Khasam.
Vasili means "royal" or "kingly."
A third cub, a young female, has yet to be named by the sponsor who purchased the naming right at the zoo's Tusks and Tails fundraising event.
The naming contest appeared on the zoo's website and Facebook page starting June 11. Participants voted for their choice from a list of possible names generated by zoo staff and volunteers.
The zoo's female tiger, Katja, delivered the three cubs in her den on March 30.
It was the third time in less than two years that Katja had given birth to a litter of cubs. None of her other offspring had survived, so staff were hopeful for success with the latest birth
