So we have to "put to sleep" the excess. There are some times too when a feral cat population will develop. While we give more leeway to feral cat populations than we do dog packs, we will eliminate those if they get too large, or if we are putting houses in that area.
All in all, though, your average cat is going to die of old age, and at a far greater age than ever before in history. No small amount of research is conducted to extend their lives out even further, and already the average lifespan is 15 plus years.
