The reason they are so rare is due to the fact that the Geoffroy's cat has 36 chromosomes while a domestic cat has 38 chromosomes - thus most breeding attempts fail. Due to this, interest in this hybrid decreased and shifted attention to more successful hybrid breeds such as the Bengal, which is still very popular today.
