The animals in the Taiga biome are specially adapted to live in extremely harsh winters, and moderate summers. The Gray Wolf has a rough fur coat, which can vary from gray, brown, white or black. Their tails are long and bushy and had long legs with large paws for navigation of deep snow. The gray wolf is the largest wild canine. They stand three feet high with a length of three to five feet from nose to the tip of their tail. The males are predominately bigger than the females weighing from 40 pounds to a whopping 176 pounds. These wolfs have characteristic yellow eyes with pointed ears.

They thrive in areas where food is plentiful. By traveling in packs they make killing their prey easier. Gray wolfs are most plentiful in northern Russia where the winters are long and the summers are short. This wolf has a lot of special adaptations. Their thick coat is comprised of wooly fur to insure good insulation, with long hairs to keep out moisture. With their pointy ears comes a sense of hearing that is twenty times sharper than any human's, and a sense of smell that can be up to hundred times better. They also have a reflective retina, which allows for better night vision. Gray wolfs have an amazing amount of stamina, they can cover eighteen miles at a moderate pace, and have a top speed of up to forty miles and hour.

These wolfs are strictly carnivores they feed on moose, caribou, and other deer-like organisms. They have also been known to be scavengers when food is scarce. Gray wolfs are top predators, secondary consumers and have no natural enemies. The only threat to them is humans. In North America they are endangered. They help keep the ecosystem going by preying on weak animals, so there is food for stronger ones.

The American Black Bear are predators in the Taiga biome. They weigh from 220 to 594 pounds. The average height of a standing black bear is from 5 to 6 feet. This bear is well adapted with its many layers of thick fur. They have short claws to assist climbing trees, and they hibernate in the winter. 75% of their diet consists of plants, and 25% from dead animals, small insects, rodents and honey. They help the environment by killing off elderly of over-populated species. This animal is a secondary consumer.

An endangered animal in the Taiga biome is the Canadian Lynx. It's close to an average house cat but larger. It has a powerful body, with stubby furry legs and large feet. The Lynx is quick and attacks without warning. It mainly hunts snowshoe hares, but will also eat meadow voles, caribou, sheep, and small deer. It can weigh 11-45 pounds and be up to 4 feet tall. Humans are destroying their habitat but lately the Lynx has been making a comeback. They are carnivorous secondary consumers.

The long eared owl is a predator, or Consumer. It's currently not on the endangered species list. It flies low to the ground using its good night sight to swoop up small mice and rodents. Using their long strong talons to tear the helpless animals into pieces for delicious consumption. This is my favorite animal in the Taiga Biome.

The Bobcat is another animal that resides in the Taiga biome. It is a top predator and feeds on mice, rabbits, squirrels and game birds that live on the ground. Some bobcats are even kept as pets in the back of some households, although they remain untamed.

In the Taiga Biome there are many important plants and trees. Poplar trees are used for the shading qualities. They are fast growing trees and have many uses like carpenters creating things made of wood and paper makers using the tree for paper pulp.

The Black Spruce is another tree located in the Taiga. It is often used to build residences. The black spruce has a great quality to it due to its natural layering it is extremely strong. We use the Black Spruce frequently when building new houses and wouldn't have as strong houses without it. The Douglas fir is a very important tree. It is used for building houses and for the flooring in houses. The natives used it for fuel on the fire and for fishing rods. It is familiar because it thrives a lot in world and also occurs here in the northwest.

The Eastern Red Cedar is home to many animals and supplies a source of food for waxwings, peasants, and other birds. Its wood is used for making fence posts and pencils and serves as a shelter for animals in the winter. The Jack Pine is an important tree to carpenters. It is used for creating houses. It thrives in the taiga with its waxy needles and thick tough bark. Another use is for making paper and using shreds of it to pack fragile materials.

The Bald eagle is the United States national bird. It is a dominant, large strong bird. They are Birds of Prey and omnivorous. They have recently been put on the endangered list and are in the process of being put on the recovered species list. Lack of food, destroying of habitats, and hunting has put these birds where they are. Without humans I believe they would thrive. The Gray Wolf has been put on the endangered list for North America and is in the process of being a recovered species. They are apart of it due to human interference and hunting

Another endangered species on the list, that live in the taiga are River Otters. They are cute little mammals that thrive in the water. They are on the list due to poor water quality, which in turn affects the fish, which is their main food source. The Canadian Lynx is hunted for its meat and lush fur. Human interference is the main cause for them being on the endangered species list. They are amazing animals and I would like to see them thrive once more.

The taiga is the largest of Earth's Biomes. We get much of our wood supply from it. It's a coniferous forest, which allows for early photosynthesis of trees and plants allowing them to create energy as soon as the sun is present. The Taiga is also home to many animals that have special adaptations to the cold. It bears many of the trees that are used in housing and other industries, which we benefit from a lot.

Some weaknesses of the Taiga Biome are the high rate of forest fire. Much of the land is forest, which is highly susceptible to fire. For housing and development the long winters and short summers make it not a very enjoyable place to reside. There also isn't a lot of variation in plant and vegetation which attributes to the fairly low variance in animals that live within the biome.
