That all depends on what species of black bear you're referring to. American Black bears can be found pretty well all over North America in woody and grassland areas, for example, and come into the towns and villages in the mountainous regions that encroach on the bear's habitat. But if you don't want to go tracking a black bear in the wild, go to a zoo to see one.

Finding were a black bear lives and actually spotting one is two different things. Black bears can live in swamps, wooded mountains, flatland forests and everything in between. Black bears do prefer thick cover to open spaces. Black bears mate in June an July and they travel long distances at this time and this is when most people see black bears so seeing fresh bear sign during these months doesn't always mean a black bear lives in this area. Outside the breeding season, all a black bear wants to do is gain weight for winter so key in on were the food is and since black bears are omnivores, this can be hard. As a general rule, Black bears eat grass, flowers, buds, etc.. in the spring, berries and such in the summer and they love acorns in the fall and they will rip apart old logs looking for ants and such. So if a person wants to find a black bear, find these food sources during the right time of year and look for bear sign such as scat, tracks, claw marks in old logs. Just remember, a bear can smell better that a bloodhound and a deer put together so control you scent as best as you can.
