In some Asian cultures, monkey brain is considered a delicacy and is definitely not a food of the poor. A traditional serving style involves cutting the skull cap off of a still living monkey (it dies shortly after), and serving the brain straight from the head immediately after the monkey dies.
At least according to a teacher of mine who did a considerable amount of globe trotting with his family when he was young. I could never have sat through such a cruel dinner engagement.
