A bloated belly can have many causes and in all cases you should take them to the vet. It can be caused by roundworm, or a condition such as bloat which is deadly. You must take your dog to the vet as soon as possible to get the proper treatment and rule out the deadly condition of bloat.

Treatment depends on what the dog's stomach is filled with and whether or not the stomach has also twisted on itself. Most Vets will attempt to remove the contents of the stomach (whether there's air or food in there) and, if necessary, take the dog to surgery to untwist the stomach and/or remove any dying tissue. Additionally, the dog will need IV fluids and excellent pain control, at the very least.

Bloat is a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate treatment by a veterinarian. It is caused by excess air trapped in the stomach, usually from exercising after eating. As this air collects, the stomach will actually twist, completely blocking anything from entering or exiting. However, gases are continued to be produced in the stomach, which causes more swelling. This enlargement can actually block the flow of major blood vessels and damage other organs. Symptoms to watch for include your dog's belly swelling and feeling like a balloon, restlessness, obvious pain and discomfort, and unproductive vomiting. As soon as these symptoms are recognized a vet should immediately be contacted, as treatment becomes or difficult as organs begin to shut down.

The best way to know for sure what is going on with your dog's digestive issue is to ask your local vet. It could be your dog is not eating the right kind of dog food, is eating too much in one day, not getting enough exercise, not drinking enough water, is eating people food and shouldn't, or the dog treats/chews are not settling well.

You take it to a veterinarian for examination and treatment immediately. While a puppy with a rounded abdomen may only have roundworms, they still need to be treated to protect your puppy's health. Other less common but much more serious problems would include intestinal obstruction, foreign body in the stomach or intestines or infection in the abdomen.
