Nuts are in a group all by themselves. in the food guide pyramid, fruits are in a separate group and vegetables are in a group by itself. However nuts are classified along with meats eggs and poultry group. In botanical terms nuts are part of the fruit of various trees such as walnut , hazel, pecan etc. Many nuts are the fruit of a plant, and the rest are seeds, but they are all considered nuts as the above answer says.
