Actually, the manatee sees in color, but not the same way a human does. The manatee sees varying shades starting in the low violet range, up through the perceptible range of yellow. This is referred to as Wave-range vision and is unique to the manatee and several other water faring creatures. Any other vision adaptation would fail based on the blood temperature of the Manatee.
Manatees have a nictitating membrane (like an alligator has) which protects its eyes. Manatees will close their eyes when sleeping. They hover or lay on the bottom and when they need a breath they will rise to the surface, take a breath and then settle back down to the bottom without ever waking up.
Manatees do not change colors to match their moods. They remain gray.
manatees have a third eyelid ,which is clear, to protect it from water getting into it.
