Red Pandas are from the procyonid family, the racoon. They are not related to bears, also known as ursidae. Studies of the red pandas have found that their DNA is more closely related to the raccoon than it is to the bear. Being told otherwise would be wrong; simply sharing similar names doesn't necessarily mean they share the same family.
