It depends on your lifestyle, family and environment. The German Shepherd is a very faithful, loyal companion and will always stick by your side if you train and care for him properly. German Shepherd Dogs are capable of getting along with most pets and especially younger kids if also introduced properly. German Shepherds require moderate exercise at least once a day. For more information you should try reading the German Shepherd Dog Kennel Club Book.
Not necessarily the best, I would say that as long as it looks scary and has a mean sounding bark and is very stong people wont be attacking your house.
As a veterinarian I'll take a shot: No. Unfortunately many shepherd dogs are surprisingly fearful- thus puts kids at the risk of bite from a 'fear bitter' situation. For the most part, I do not think that "family" and "guard dog" belong in the same sentence, unless the dog undergoes extensive training. If you want to pursue this, I would lean towards a Dobermen Pincher instead. However, a large "family dog" such a lab, golden etc will still have enough of a bark to offer a warning, and be a much safer choice around the kids.

A German Shepherd , a Doberman, or a Rottweiler.
i don't think so, German shepherd is a breed that makes the 2 best guard dog, so i recommended you if you buy a bulldog or a German sheperd, NEVER buy a German sheperd with a bulldog, they might tear each other into pieces. But it is up to you, that was just my warning, the choice is yours.

A bored German Shepherd can become destructive so it is best to entertain him/her with plenty of exercise and toys(Kong balls are usually their favorite).
