Like all other xenarthran lineages, armadillos originated in South America. Due to the continent's former isolation, they were confined there for most of the Cenozoic.
There are a number of species of armadillo and all are from North, Central and South America. They are found in a number of states in the southeastern United States and their range continues to expand. Before the 19th century they were not found in the United States but have rapidly expanded their range since crossing the Rio Grande from Mexico.
