Whaling is the main reason. When it was first started, whale numbers were pretty high. Now however, whaling has gotten more serious, and whalers only use the meat off the whale. To add to this, whales have a low recovery rate, and so they reproduce very slowly. Within a century, whales will be extinct if whalers don't stop now. They are beautiful creatures and don't deserve the painful death they get.
There are now less whales in the food chain because of popular demand in countries such as Japan for whale meat. Also because as the ozone hole depletes more Ultra Violet rays come through and melt the ice in Antarctica which causes the phytoplankton which live in the ice to decrease as their habitat is destroyed, which means the krill have less to eat which means the whales have less to eat and so they are left without food.
i am not sure what it was but i would reccamend maby looking at animalplanet.com for the answer
The whale population has decreased dramatically from the time in which whaling was a popular industry to the present. Whale oil is not used often today because whales are being protected.

The global whale population decreased from the heydays of Whaling, conducted by Britain, United States, Norway, even Australia in the late 1800s to the early 1900s by 70-80%. The IWC, International Whaling Commission put in place a gobal moratorium on comercial whaling in 1982. Since then certain species are believed to have recovered in great numbers, such as Minke Whales, while other species, such as Blue Whales remain on the endangered list.
