There is no set number of trees in a koala's territory. There may be dozens; there may be hundreds. A koala's territory covers up to a square kilometre, so it depends on the individual koala.

One of the main things that helps a koala survive is its ability to quickly climb tall, straight trees which few other animals can climb. Koalas have very sharp claws, and they are ale to climb even smooth-barked trees quickly. Once it is in the tree, it is equipped with a padded backside which enables it to spend many hours comfortably in the tree. Two of the koala's digits on their forelimbs act as opposable thumbs, enabling koalas to reach out and grasp the leaves and gum blossoms they want to eat. The koala's unique digestive system also helps it to survive. Koalas live in eucalyptus trees and eat only a few types of gum leaves from which they get all nutrients and water requirements. Eucalyptus leaves are tough, toxic and low in nutrition, but the koala's digestive system is capable of removing the toxins, filtering them out by the liver. The caecum completes the process by changing the eucalyptus leaves into digestible nutrients. The caecum is similar to the human appendix.

All bears have the ability to climb trees. -- Many books will say that brown bears (grizzlys) can't climb trees. While they can climb if they have branches, the largest ones are too heavy to climb using just their claws, which are not as curved as a black bear claw is. All black bears can climb trees, but very large males may chose to run or fight if chased rather than flee up trees.
The Koala has many adaptations. The Koala has fur that is water repellant and protects them fom hot and cold weather. Koalas have a large nose to determine if the eucalypts leaves that they are about to eat are poisonous or not. Also, the koalas paws are thickly padded, allowing for a better grip as the koalas climb.
Koalas have many unique abilities. One for which they are possibly best known is that they have very strong claws suitable for gripping trees and climbing. Between their first and second "fingers" is a large gap, which enables them to also grip tree branches comfortably, whilst their hind legs have one toe set at a wide angle.

There are a few individuals of many breeds that can climb trees, but as a whole most dogs cannot. Exceptions to this rule include the Catahoula Leopard Dog, the Tree Walking Coonhound, Jack Russell Terrier, and the New Guinea Singing Dog. Most dogs cannot get a good grip on tree bark in order to dig their claws into it, so people sometimes train their pets to get a running start and jump onto trees. Grey foxes, although not technically dog, can also climb trees.
The koala's habitat is dominated by eucalyptus trees, but there are many other native plants as well. Melaleucas and wattle (acacia) are very common, as is callistemon. Grass trees are often found in the area as well.
