The final stage is diestrus and it lasts approximately 60 days, depending on whether or not your female is pregnant. That's the complete cycle, and your looking at having 2 heats per year.
My female APBT had to wear pull-ups for 9 days and started her first heat when she was seven months old. I mention pull-ups (night, not day) because I found they were much easier to keep on her than the doggie diapers and much cheaper!! I just cut a slit to pull her tail through and she was good to go!
