You don't know, a cat will have it's kittens where it decides is the best spot to do so. If you're talking a house cat you could try making a spot for it in a warm, out of the way place near food and water and spend time with the cat there so it gets comfortable with it. However while this may help it's not a guarantee she'll have her kittens there.

That I know of, between 4-8. But sometimes if the mother cat is thin or smaller than she should be she might give birth to less kittens and you never know how many kittens she might have. Some cats only have one kitten while others have 5 or something.
Bring your cat into your house while she's pregnant and keep her in there until she gives birth and the kittens grow up.
