Your foal is born with the potential to gain a certain number of skill points through rides, competitions, lessons, and training during its life on Howrse. This potential is determined by the quality (genetic potential and BLUP combined) of its parents, and can only be increased after birth through foal games, to a maximum of 1.2 points.
You can play foal games with your horse from the ages of 8 months to one year 6 months.

At most ages you are feeding a little less than recommended so as to get ready to overfeed at 18 mos. You MUST feed 14 pounds at 18 months to be able to put your horse to bed with 20% energy. Do not feed more than 4 pounds on each day when it says to feed just 4 pounds. The horse is eating a little in the pasture, and will be at a good/healthy weight when games are done. A pony (or small horse) may need to be underfed slightly at 20 months.

Use a foal games programme (eg the one listed on howrsehelper, google it) and improve the genetic potential of two of your foals (ones which you have bred) until they are 1 year 8 months old. It should validate then.

The potential that is not reached cannot be reached once your horse is over 1yr8mo. If you want to improve it, you must do it between the age of 8mo and 1yr8mo. You can improve the potential only then, by playing the foal games. It doesn't matter if your horse has finished all its training or not if it's older than 1yr8mo.
