Monkey reproduction tends to be filled with different rituals depending on the species. Females are attracted to the largest and strongest males which are the leaders of the group and the only ones that will mate within the group. Males fight for dominance and some will depart from the group once they reach maturity so that they can begin their own groups. Sometimes males will take over a group by challenging and sometimes killing the leader so that the females will be ready to mate with only him. He will also kill the young to prepare the females for mating. Once pregnant the gestation period is approximately 4-6 months depending on the species. The female gives birth to one baby, sometimes 2 but that is rare. She will only give birth every couple of years and bonds with her baby much like human mothers.
