Before the age of four a female horse is a filly. After that age she's a mare.

Any male horse that has not been castrated is called a stallion whether he is a breeding stallion or not.

After castration a male horse is a gelding.

There is male and female genders in horses ( just like with most creatures.) However the genders are broken down by age and reproductive ability.

Filly or Filly foal: A newborn to 3 year old female horse.

Mare: A female horse 4 years of age or older.

Broodmare: A female horse of any age used for reproduction.

Spayed Mare: A mare that has been spayed and cannot reproduce. ( this term is not often used.)


Colt or Colt Foal: A newborn to 3 year old male horse.

Stallion: A 4 year old and older horse with the ability to reproduce.

Stud Stallion: A stallion used for breeding.

Gelding: A male horse of any age that cannot reproduce.
