Yeah, he does. Dogs are really good at sniffing out other dogs, and they can tell by scent that you are not one. There's also evidence that dogs can clearly differentiate who's a dog and who's not by sight, so there's really no evidence that your dog thinks you're just a big dog.

However, that doesn't mean he sees you as an alien. There's good evidence that your dog thinks of you like a protector—one study found that dogs are more willing to interact with an unfamiliar environment if their owners were there, exhibiting behavior very similar to how young children act with their parents. So your dog knows you're not a dog, but they still see you as family, and that's pretty sweet.

my dog knows.. He will chase his own tail with no problem, but when i do it he gets super sad. then desperately he judges other dogs like he trying to win a fetch sesh, or the federal ice skating judge's committee on southern Latin America's political position, in persia, place-holding paradise! . And no matter how he urinates, it's always on the couch. the "cushion," to be clear(on foam) is where he always goes. he cares where he goes. he either loves or hates himself, me, both, or doesn't want to eat great big cat turd in the sky. Even though it is covered with kitty litter he can't resist, i think he is addicted.I am glad we will both be nibbling on the sprinkled morsel one day in spaghetti and meatballs land. I am a bad dogfather, but I only have one leg.

I believe that dogs know that people are not the same as them, but I can't produce strong evidence to confirm this. I think this involves an interesting subject, whether it is possible to truly and comprehensively communicate between different species, maybe this is a big topic.

Animals, including dogs actually can identify people from other animals. They know the animals they hunt for prey and are aware of those not to be eaten. They know strangers from the regular people through their scent. They know other dogs too. All animals know how to track their homes too. A funny thing is that dogs know the other animals kept as pets in their home.

User Avatar

Of course he/she does. Dogs are smart and although they may expect some dog-like qualities from you, they know that you're human.
