There are multiple reasons for labored or difficult breathing in your dog, ranging from your dog just ran around the yard like crazy to pneumothorax. If you can't find a reason for your dog to be breathing heavily (exercise, hot and/or humid environment), you should definitely keep a close eye on him and possibly take him to a veterinarian.

Some breeds are known to have breathing issues, particularly if they are in hot environments and haven't had surgery to shorten their soft palate - these are the brachycephalic (smashed-in face) breeds like pugs, Boston terriers and Maltese. If taking these types of dogs into an air-conditioned environment doesn't improve their breathing in a few minutes, you need to get them to a veterinarian.

Other causes for heavy breathing include infection, cancer, fluid in the lungs from any of a number of causes and trauma to the rib cage or chest. Depending upon the severity, any of these might need immediate veterinary care.

It could be that the hard breathing is only really noticed when the dog is laying still. Labored breathing in resting dogs is usually indicative of heartworm infestation and the dog should be checked by a vet.

Yes. They dream and also sleep very heavily just the same as humans. Their breaths per min should be 20-25. If dogs breathe faster than that while sleeping or at rest it usually means they are in some sort of pain.

1st Answer:

It is probably tired, of hot. If it lays with his belly on the cold floor he is trying to cool down. Dogs cannot sweat, they breath heavy instead.

2nd Answer:

If there is no other reason for the dog to be tired and panting heavily, then you should take your dog in to be checked over by your Veterinarian. Your dog could have a heart condition or over heated (which can kill). Yes, your dog can sweat. They sweat through their tongues and pads of their feet. If you suspect your dog of being over heated, take his or her temperature. Normal temp is 101 - 102 so if much over that, be worried & get your pet to a Veterinarian immediately.

Dogs pant because they do not have sweat glands, this is their way of cooling off

It means that their heart is races and that they probably ran before you saw them breathing hard.

It's normal, nothing to be scared of.

It also may mean that it is kind of hot.
