The adult hippo's only real enemy (other than man) is his pool mate. They bite, maim, and kill each other. The bulls fight over females in breeding season and quarrel over water space at all times, especially in dry season. When seen yawning, a hippo may actually be threatening another hippo or just telling him beet it you shrimp.
I would say that humans are the only real threat to hippos, since they are so large and can easily outrun most animals who'd try to kill one. They are estremely strong and very hostile, and could crush a man by treading on them, or ould snap one in half with their huge jaws. Lions who try to attack their young usually come out dead, or (if they're lucky) alive with a few broken bones and empty handed.
Their young, however, are often eaten by crocodiles.

Hippos are not normally carnivorous. They mostly eat plants, and by and large act as herbivores. Hippos are omnivorous though, and can become opportunistic predators. In times of drought, Hippos have been known to scavenge dead animals, hunt and kill animals to eat, and even have had bouts of cannibalism.
