A giraffe can give quite a kick, even to a lion, and will defend their young as do most herbivorous (plant-eating) mammals that live in groups or 'herds'.

Just watch 'Battle at Kruger' on Utube to see herd animals (Buffalo in this case) defending their young against lions!
