In general, they do not want to be wet. Do not expect this breed to go in the water beyond wading. My shiba will wade, but doesn't want her face or head to get wet. She is also afraid to be out over water, like on a dock. She also does not like waves. I think it more the noise than anything else.
Shih Tzus can not swim well and would not do well in the water. There are plenty of books available on the breed. They are wonderful dogs. Great with kids and can be taught to bark only when someone new is at the door. Our dog does not even bark when other dogs bark at him and has been taught not to lick me even though other members of the family allow him to lick them. Great breed of dog!
Some of them do. I had 3 shiba inus. My first one LOVED to swim! The second one hated it, and the one I have now hates it.
