The term absorb is somewhat incorrect even when the conceptus is quite small as eventually the dead tissue is expelled when the mare cycles back into heat. Any horse can expel a small enough early pregnancy that goes unnoticed. Mares farther along can abort in an uncontrolled area where evidence can be hidden or consumed...if they are far enough along they should have a considerable change in their body size, which may be less evident in a very fuzzy miniature.
