Rabbits are not a good pet for your children. Believe it or not, rabbits take more work than a cat or dog. They do not live well in cages, so if you do choose to cage your rabbit, you will need to give it several hours a day outside his cage. This should probably be supervised time, and most children are incapable of this length of supervision. Rabbits are also often hurt by children stepping or falling on them, or by dropping them. Most rabbits really do not like to be held and will scratch or bite and squirm in order to be put down. Rabbits are also very emotional creatures and can become stressed for a variety of reasons. It takes a watchful owner to recognize the difference in bunny behavior and know when to take the rabbit to the vet.
That being said, if they are to be a family pet, and the parents take responsibility, they can be a great lesson for a children in responsibility, and they can provide alot of enjoyment for the family. I've found that house rabbits (yes, you can easily litterbox train a rabbit) are the most happy buns. If you are still considering a rabbit as a pet, please consider making him a house rabbit and not confining him to a cage.
