I would definitely bring along a good friend, first of all. After that, "things" that were important to me. My scriptures, some good Science Fiction novels, or poetry books, or some read-out-loud books neither of us have read and we are both interested in, if those two genres fail. ...maybe card games or a puzzle if we were going to be in one place for a while. Some good walking shoes, and enough socks, jeans, t-shirts and underwear so that I didn't have to do laundry... or too much laundry, depending on how long the trip is. :) Might need a laptop for a long trip to keep up with email from family and friends, or the latest video game, if there is down time. :) ... and the phone numbers of important contacts at our destination(s). My journal, some quiz books to read in the car to the driver (if we are going by car)... snacks, definitely snacks. Hmm... my wallet in case I want to buy souvenirs, or need my passport, or we get pulled over by the cops... whatever. Paper and something to write with... in case I have a story idea, or in case we need to keep score for one of the card games, or in case I can't get across what I am thinking without drawing some sort of crazy diagram, or in case we need to play a spur-of the moment game of pictionary, or hangman... Might bring some emergency supplies in case of an emergency... first aid kit, blankets... other stuff in case of inclement weather wherever we are going. Tissues in case someone ends up crying... or in case someone gets a cold. ... can't think of anything else right now. Getting excited about it though... where are we going? :)

It rather depended on how long the houseboat trip was likely to take. For instance, if the trip was only a day-trip, sandwiches and a drink would suffice.
