From within the European Union - you can bring back an unrestricted amount of alcohol to the UK provided you can prove its for personal use (saying "...I'm an alcoholic does not count !

Although there are no limits coming back from an EEC country, customs may ask questions if you have large quantities. See the related link to the UK Government's own web-site for a more detailed explanation.

Any alcohol with less than 5% alcohol content is not subject to regulation and you can fly with as much as you want. Alcohol between 24% and 70% is only restricted with more than five quarts. Any proof higher than that is restricted I believe.
