Punctuations? You mean quotation marks? Well, I guess you can use them to quote material, show dialog, identify the title of a poem, etc., and you can use them to show how a certain word or phrase might be ironic. This can sometimes cause confusion. Take this headline for example: Ted Haggard says he is "completely pizzacrazy." Notice how the "completely pizzacrazy." could be (and probably should be) taken both as a quote and an ironic use of the phrase.

If you just meant punctuation in general you should probably purchase a book on grammar, since that would be too much to explain in one of these little boxes.

AnswerWhen you can use punctuation, according to the rules of English grammar, depends on which punctuation mark you want to use.

The period, for instance, should be used at the end of a sentence, unless the sentence is a question. Then you would use a question mark. If you want to make a side comment (like this) in the middle of a sentence, use parentheses. Ellipses usually show omitted information... or a long pause in your thinking (informally).

Here are a couple of links with more information; the first one is a writing center that has lessons and quizzes to help you learn, and the second is the wikipedia article with links to more kinds of punctuation:

Proper punctuation should be used to clarify meaning, aid in reading comprehension, and enhance the overall flow of your writing. You should use punctuation marks such as commas, periods, question marks, exclamation points, colons, and semicolons to separate ideas, indicate pauses, and organize your writing effectively. It is important to follow punctuation rules to ensure your writing is clear, concise, and easy to understand.

It depends what punctuation mark you are talking about. A full stop (.) is used at the end of a sentence. A coma (,) is used in the middle of the sentence to split it up into different parts. A question mark (?) is used after a question, obviously. An exclamation mark (!) is used after an exclamation is made, or when somebody shouts. Speech marks ("") are put either side of the sentence that somebody is saying. An apostrophe (') is used in an abbreviation (eg. don't) or in plural cases. There are also many other punctuation marks which are used at different times when writing, but the ones listed above are probably the most common.

i know punctuation can seem pointless but you need it to help you firgure out where to pause so the sentence makes sense if you said for example:

Time flies you cannot they go too fast.

becomes

Time flies? You cannot; they go too fast.

One should use commas for punctuation very carefully. The use of commas tends to be overused. Use commas to separate words in a list. Use commas with coordinating conjunctions that connect two independent clauses. Don't rely on what seems like a natural pause to decide when to use a comma.
