Silent Letters are called just that, but if you want to be specific, there are different kinds of silent letters. 'Inert' letters are leftover from when a word is shortened. For example, you do not sound the 'n' in 'damn', but you do in 'damnation'. 'Empty' letters are never sounded at all, like the 'b' in 'subtle'. There are other kinds too.

A silent letter in a word is called a "ghost letter." These letters are written but not pronounced when the word is spoken.
