To "shanghai" means to force or coerce someone into doing something against their will. This was a common practice in the days of sail, when people would often be drugged or knocked unconscious and taken aboard a ship to serve as able seamen. Ex: "Shanghai ten men so we can get this voyage underway!', the captain said."

Shanghai is also a city in China. Ex: "My uncle Pan, from Shanghai, wrote me an e-mail."
