I live in "the South" (in Alabama) and yes, people here in general are generally slow paced.

I was actually just researching WHY this is the case and came across this. I found a lot of things where people tried to use rhetoric and sophism to say that the stereotypes about the South aren't true or whatever but I am telling you, as a generality, yes they are.

Where I live, people on average drive 5 mph under the speed limit when the limit is below 50 mph and drive 10-15 mph under the speed limit when the limit is 55 or more.

Again, these are generalities and apply to any "southern" person regardless of age.

The slow movement also applies to walking. I don't really walk "fast" and I don't drive any more than about 5 mph over the speed limit. Now, in a parking lot, I walk faster than most drive in the lots, so they have to be going far slower than 5mph (the speed limit for most parking lots). I even, for a brief period, had to walk with a cane and had difficulty moving and STILL walked faster than most people.

If you look it up, you'll find a lot of sophism along the lines of "southerners aren't slow, they're deliberate". You can be deliberate without being slow; as a matter-of-fact, deliberation (to act with careful consideration or thought) has nothing inherently to do with speed. I do most things deliberately, especially when driving since most people are awful at it, and I'm still much faster (and more accurate).

As far as anything other than movement (driving/walking), I couldn't tell you if they are slow-paced. There's not much to do in most places in the South and even less cultural enrichment. In a 50-70 mile radius of where I live, I only know of two or three art museums/galleries and the majority of the art they have is "Southern" art. Most people age 18-25 typically spend their time hanging out in Walmart parking lot and drinking. This is true and not a stereotype, at least for Alabama. When there's nothing to do but go to the mall or hang out at Walmart, it's difficult to "live fast and hard" (not that living fast and hard is a good thing).

Stereotyping any group of people based on region is not accurate or fair. People from the South come in all different personalities and paces, just like people from any other region. It's important to remember that individuals are unique and should not be judged based on where they come from.
