CSI is a TV show. There are Crime Scene Inv. in the real world, but they mostly process crime scenes and bag and tag the evidence - that's it. I have been a street cop for almost 10 years and have taken rape cases, homicides, and robberies. The investigation is a joint effort by evidence techs, detectives, lab tech, SA or DAs and patrolman. All of whom are cops trained in a task (except for the SA/DA they are lawyers). On the show the CSI's do the work of what in the real world would take about 10 people. It takes a long time to process DNA and match finger prints. The work needs to be done by a pro in a lab with years of training and exp. Remember this case has to go to court and the tech will need to testify to the test they performed. Most jurisdictions specialize persons for each task of the investigation. But to answer the advancement question, a cop can move up to work on larger task forces and to higher levels of supervisor. There is always more and bigger crimes.

The child slave likely called their mother by her name, "mother," or a term of endearment if possible. Communication and contact among family members were restricted in many instances, so the child may have used any opportunity to show love and connection to their mother.
