Massachusetts, one of the cradles of Liberty, was in the North, and at the time of the Civil War- in fact long before it- did not have Slavery.

EDIT: CORRECTION...THIS STATE WAS THE FIRST STATE TO HAVE SLAVES AND HAD SLAVERY FOR ABOUT 170 YEARS. WITH INDUSTRIALIZATION AND AN INFLUX OF NEW IMMIGRANTS, THE NOTIONS OF THE PEOPLE CHANGED AND BY 1800 SLAVERY WAS ILLEGAL. There was very little differncce in the work that slaves had to do. In all slave states the slaves were used to do agricultural work, house work, and the various trades.

In Massachusetts, slavery was less prevalent than in the southern states and the economy relied less on enslaved labor. Slaves in Massachusetts were more likely to work in households or on small farms, while in the South slavery was central to large-scale plantation agriculture. Massachusetts gradually abolished slavery starting in the late 18th century, while slavery persisted in the South until the Civil War.
