In 1959, Ray committed armed robbery after he stole $120 from a Kroger in St. Louis. In 1969, he was charged with the murder of Martin Luther King, Jr. and sentenced to 99 years in prison. In 1977, while serving his murder charge, Ray escaped from prison and, when caught again, a year was added to his 99 year sentence, making it a total of 100 years.
