They are the same.

Added: Correct, however there is no "FBI Agent" position within the FBI. Special Agents are general service series 1811/Criminal Investigators. "FBI Agent" is a commonly used slang, but their official title is "Special Agent." https://fbijobs.gov
What is the difference between a police detective and a private
detective?
Private detectives lack the authority of the police department but, there jobs are basically the same as far as the investigations are concerned.
A private detective investigates all of the same types of things as the police detective.
The big difference between the two is private operated and government operated.
Private detectives are do basically personal works.
Crime Scene Investigators (CSI's) are specially trained evidence gathering, and evidence processing technicians who may or may not be sworn law enforcement officers. If they are civilian employees, their only duty is the collection and analyzing of criminal evidence.
Agents of the the Federal Bureu of Investigation (FBI) - are all sworn federal law enforcement oficers who's main duty is to function as investigators, assembling a case from many resources which will result in the successful prosecution of a criminal. Some of them MAY be trained as CSI's but not necessarily.
The cops are restricted to working within the jurisdiction of any given state. when the criminal activity crosses state borders the FBI can work on it as they are a federal agency able to work any where in the united states without border restrictions.
The difference between a cop and an FBI is that cops are there for the protection of the civilians but FBI is there for doing investigations of murder and bringing them to justice
To make it short, police detectives have arrest powers, and personal investigators don’t.
Police detectives affect criminal cases and personal investigators deal more with civil cases.
In some cases, so as for a detective to get information, they need to induce search warrants, whereas private investigators have fewer hoops to leap through. Plus private investigators have more access to a subject’s financial situation, which a detective doesn’t.
There are special circumstances where if a police department hires a personal investigator, the investigator will have equivalent powers as a law enforcement officer. this will be a disadvantage because so as to question someone for a possible crime, the investigator will need to give the topic his or her Miranda Rights. If they stay as an investigator, they won’t have that to affect.
