That would depend on the sort of fishing you are doing and where the week points are or where you want them to be. If you are fishing for species where the teeth could sever the line then a strong (even steel) tracer is indicated. However in most other situations a lighter tracer is used so that this breaks first and the main line is preserved. This is because:- 1) you do not want to leave long lengths of line to pollute the environment and a weaker, breaking tracer prevents this. 2) where the fishing line is expensive and specialized (eg an expensive floating fly-fishing line), you may want to avoid over stretching it and using a light tracer is that breaks easily ensures this. 3) a light tracer is more sporting for the fish. 4) a light tracer is more difficult to see in the water.
