depends on how many hours they ask for in a day! depends on how many hours they ask for in a day! Most full-time firefighters work a 24 on 48 off schedule. That means that you are at work for 24 hours and then your off for 48 hours.

It all depends on how long there shifts are and that would change from department to department.

Some shifts are 24 hours on and 48 hours off duty. Generally from 7am to 7am. Some departments work 24 hours on and 24 hours off for 14 days then you would be off for 7 days then the cycle will start over again. FDNY works an 8 hour rotating shift where you would work 7-3, 3-11 and 11-7 shifts since they have such a large call volume throughout the shift.

Some depts also do 48 hours on and 96 hours off as well... Some California depts do 24 on, 24 off, 24 on, 24 off, 24 on, 24 off, 24 on, 96 off, repeat with 144 hours off instead of 96... then back...

FDNY does not work 8 hour shifts, they work 9 and 15 hour shifts... you work 9amx6pm for 2 days, then get 2 days off, then you work 6pmx9am and then get 3 days off, then repeat...

There is no specific answer for this question, because work hours and schedules vary from state to state and department to department. As an example, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. (CalFire), works their employees 72 hours on and 96 hours off. However, there are dozens of different schedules and the work week varies depending on whether the department is Federal, state or local government. Here are a few examples.

10 hours on, 14 hours off, 10 hours on, 14 hours off, 14 hours on, 10 hours off. Numerous variation of this one, particularly back East.

24 hours on, 48 hours off, repeat.

24 hours on, 24 hours off, 24 hours on, 24 hours off, 24 hours on, 96 hours off, repeat.

48 hours on, 96 hours off, repeat.

72 hours on, 96 hours off, repeat.

Generally, most departments work firefighters between 48 and 56 hours per week. However, some departments, like the CalFire and Federal Firefighters have a longer work week. For some perspective, compare this to the turn of the century, when firefighters worked 28 days out of the month, with three hours off each day to go home for meals, which meant they worked over 135 hours per week. In general, firefighters routinely work 20%-40% more hours per week than the average worker, not counting overtime.

The following is written by and according to the U.S. Department of Labor and particular firefighters.

Work hours of fire fighters are longer and more varied than the hours of most other workers. Many fire fighters work about 50 hours a week, and sometimes they may work longer. In some agencies, fire fighters are on duty for 24 hours, then off for 48 hours, and receive an extra day off at intervals. In others, they work a day shift of 10 hours for 3 or 4 days, work a night shift of 14 hours for 3 or 4 nights, have 3 or 4 days off, and then repeat the cycle. In addition, fire fighters often work extra hours at fires and other emergencies and are regularly assigned to work on holidays. Fire lieutenants and fire captains frequently work the same hours as the fire fighters they supervise.

Most firefighters are scheduled to work 2920 hours per year. (number of days in a year divided by 3 the number of shift each department has). Most departments work between 48 and 53 hours per week on an average (usually based on 28 days).

If you worked a 48 hour workweek, you would work 2496 hours.

If you worked a 53 hour workweek, you would work 2756 hours.

You may hear the term Kelly Day or Kelly Shift, this is a shift you are scheduled off to reduce your work hours usually to a contracted amount. This is what gets you to between 48 and 53 hour workweek.

The Fair Labor Standard Act defines the 7K exemption that say public firefighters can work up to 53 hours per week before overtime has to be paid. Everyone else would be paid overtime after 40 hours per week. This is why most departments do not work in excess of 53 hours per week.

Most firefighters in the USA are volunteers or on "call companies" and only work when there is a fire.

So-called "career" firefighters generally work a 40-hour week, although it might not be evenly distributed as five 8-hour days.

How many hours does a firefighter work per day?

It's kind of strange compared to most jobs. It's fairly typical for a firefighter to be "on duty" for 24 hours straight, and then off for 48. "On duty" does not necessarily mean actually fighting a fire; firefighters can sleep, cook, eat, play games, or whatever during that 24 hours, but they have to be at the fire station and prepared to roll out if an alarm comes in.
