Serial killers are not described by number of kills, rather, by the method and psychological factors that went into the kills. For example, ssgt. Giunta in afganastan killed between 9& 13 people in a 20min. period of time. By your definition, we should have him executed. Instead we gave him the congressional Medal of Honor. Son of Sam killed the same number of people but he was a serial killer. Most female serial killers are suffering from munchousen by proxy. The others are in almost always involved with male serial killers, or they kill men who remind them of their male abusers. Women make up approximately 51% of the earths population, they represent less then half of that percentile in murders. And less then half that percentile of serial killers. At any given time there are approximately 300 serial killers operating in the USA. Statistically speaking, only, about 10 of those are women. Almost all serial killers are are white males between 18&45 So most serial killer profiles begin with that group of people. That is unless the victims are children or men that died of poisoning or genital mutilation.
//Female serial killers comprise only 8% of all American serial killers. Furthermore, American female serial killers comprise 76% of female serial killers world-wide. The total for female serial killers is around 62 to 65. Contrary to the above information, Munchausen by proxy is one of the rarest conditions and makes up only a small percentage of total female serial killers.
The FBI estimates that at any given time there may be up to 50 active serial killers.//
Vronsky lists 140. The Unknown History of MISANDRY"Female Serial Killer Index," however, includes a great many more that are not on Vronsky's list. No thorough study of pre-1970s female serial killers has ever been conducted, but the latest total of known FSKs is close to 400. 1925 was a big year for FSKs. One US newspaper article even has pictures of 3 FSKs featured in concuurrent prosecutions: Wise, Sorenson & Cunningham.
Catching a female serial killer before the 20th century was a tricky thing to do. The method was frequently poison. Mostly these female got over 40 kills before getting caught. Before the 20th century we got:
Countess Elizabeth Bathory born in 1560
Delphine LaLaurie born in 1775
Mary Ann Cotton was born in 1832
Amelia Elizabeth Dyer born in 1838
Belle Sorenson Gunness born in 1859-Her killings spree were from 1900 to 1908
thus bringing the 20th century female serial in view.
Madame Popova born in 1879 and executed in 1909.
After that we have the serial killers after the 1900s.
To the Contrary - 1992 Women Serial Killers 8-4 was released on: USA: 16 April 1999

Serial means a series of crimes, usually one at a time, with a 'cooling off' period in between kills. The cooling off time depends on the individual killer. Jack The Ripper killed two women in the space of an hour. Some killers may not kill again for several years.
We had a female British serial killer has admitted murdering three men and dumping their bodies in ditches.

Your local library may have some material on female serial killers but the Internet is a virtual gold mine of information on this subject. You can access FBI statistics, books and DVDs to purchase and hundreds of websites to assist you.
For some odd reasons some serial killers choose children as prey. Andrei Romanovich Chikatilo was a notorious Russian children serial killer who also killed women.
Bodyguards or personal scorts, have been hired to protect children wealthy person or government personell but I don't think serial killers have made the list of the persons you should watch out for and I did not find records of a single incident where a bodyguard was put on a wacth out for a serial killer.
"Some only affect their victims and their families, and the surrounding community. But some serial killers are important to history. Jack the Ripper's assault on poor women in increasingly affluent 1880's London shone a much-needed public light on poverty there."
Although not as plentiful as male serial killers, history shows that women are not immune to killing in numbers. The biggest difference in men and women serial killers is the how and why of their crimes. Male serial killers are a whole different animal and are driven by completely different forces. For men its about control, sex, control. They are usually driven by strong violent fantasies. And they are usually strangers or near strangers to the victims. Women serial killers are most likely to kill someone they know. Nurses kill their patients for varying reasons. They kill relatives for monetary gain. This is not the complete list but it gives a good idea of how a woman kills. They are big on poison, too. Then there are the women, rare though they are, that kill their children. Not Andrea Yates, the Texas housewife that drowned her 5 small children in their bathtub. The women that suffer from Muchausen's by Proxy. These women kill their own children for the attention it brings them. Although Aileen Wuornos has been touted as the first female serial killer, she was far from it. What made Wuornos non-typical was she killed men she did not know. But it was about monetary gain. So except for the stranger/victims she was more typical than people realize. They had what she wanted/needed so she took it. (money, car) These are just examples, and of course there are always exceptions to the rules but this gives a good idea of women killers.
Italy had some serial killers during the last century. One odd serial killer to come across is Leonarda Cianciulli, the so-called "Soap-Maker of Correggio" who murdered three women in Correggio between 1939 and 1940, and turned their bodies into soap. Italian authorities have an issue divulging on going investigations. That is why this question is hind of hard to answer. The best answer you could get is that most probably there is one. The fact is that a number of Serial Killers over the years have committed serial murder in Italy a no person have been apprehended.
There's no real, indisputable litmus test to tell if someone has the potential to be a serial killer. Serial killer can be your garden keeper. Most of them do poorly in school despite having IQs that usually average between 105 and 120, and some drop out of high school or college. Serial killers also hop from one low wage job to another, or tend to be habitually unemployed. Serial killers usually have trouble attracting women.
