One reason was so that the branches could be checks and balances for each other. The founders didn't want any one group or individual to be able to accumulate too much power. They were reacting against the monarchies and aristocracies that existed at the time.
It's called seperation of power. But first of all, the U.S. won its independance from England. Then, they thought, "Wow, we're so unorganized and there's too much social unrest, let's make a government." Then, delegates from each state convened and talked about all that doodly dally. Finally, they said, "Hey, let's have a democracy with three branches of government." They created the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial Branch of governement. THE END
So there would be checks and balances and tyranny would be prevented.
To keep each other in line, it's called "the check and balance system." None of them can have any more power than any of the others.
Go on my blog and I'll show you.
Think about it this way, a stool needs 3 legs to keep from falling.
Think about the government branches as legs on a stool. They will not work to keep it upright without each other.
So no one branch or person has all the power. It is called "checks and balance". The framers of the constitution didn't want to create a king since they had just fought a war against a king.
