It was the first election of a U.S. President whose ancestry is half European/ half African.
It was the first time that a Democratic presidential candidate received more than 50% of the nationwide popular votes since Jimmy Carter did in 1976, and it was the first time that a Democratic presidential candidate both received more than 50% of the nationwide popular votes and carried more than 50% of the states since Lyndon Johnson did in 1964.
It was also the first U.S. presidential election since 1952 in which neither the incumbent President nor the incumbent Vice President was a candidate.
Everyone is concerned about the 2016 candidates - in that we are united. The current election is so important simply because there is a divide between the people of the US regarding the business of government and the benefits it provides to the society as a whole. In short, some believe that there is a benefit to acting together to making life better for everyone in terms of health, education and infrastructure. Others believe that the government should do less, lower taxes, and that the public ownership route is the most efficient way to run prisons, schools and health care. In terms of infrastructure, it seems that some feel the money is there and taxes should not be increased to build and maintain it. Immigration, religious beliefs, guns and that sort of thing are just popular topics during the election. In any case, neither of the party platforms are black or white; solutions are usually a compromise - and that is the saving grace of this whole thing. Not one party will have its way entirely.
