I would like to say, "because they are stupid." but this is illogical as dogs do not think on the level of humans and the animals are probably only barking to get your attention. They want you to know that they have found something. Dogs acute sense of smell allows them to get lots of information from just one whiff If your dog becomes so interested in a particular lamp post that he pulls towards it and barks, it is very likely he simply smelled a smell that he wants to go and sniff some more. It may just be another dog scent.
