It's my understanding the prosecuting attorney represents the people when the accused is brought to court on criminal charges. Private attorney's represent the defendant in arguing why the accused person is not guilty, or if there were mitigating circumstances making circumstances explaining why they did what they did.Additional Information: (in the US) Private attorneys do NOT prosecute criminal cases, they are prosecuted by government attorney's (prosecutors) who do so on behalf of the "people."Defendants are free to retain their own 'private' attorney to represent them or, if indigent, they are afforded the services of the Public Defenders Office (a taxpayer supported agency).
Criminal Law Attorneys should not represent people involved with hate crimes.

a direct democracy would be near impossible in a country with as many citizens as the U.S., which is why we are governed by a representative democracy.
Gideon v. Wainright 372 U.S. 335 confirmed the right's of an indigent defendant in any criminal trial to have an attorney appointed to represent him. Prior to Gideon, attorneys were only appointed to indigent defendants charged with capital crimes.
Public defenders are free for indigent defendants. Inexpensive defense attorneys can be found in the yellow pages.

A public defenders responsibilities may involve, defending individuals charged with felonies, represent juvenile delinquents in child abuse and neglect cases, meet witnesses, establish close contact with defendants and act as a negotiator between the defendant and the attorneys office.
That is doubtful. Attorneys typically represent areas where there is a large client pool. An area such as this is not so common. However, you can just go to a normal attorney to see if they will represent you.
