Well, technically they are officers. They preform the duties of police officers and fall under the career label of "police officer." HOWEVER They get very irritated if you refer to them as "officer." In fact, they will correct even attorneys or judges in open court if they are referred to as officer. The title is Trooper. Troopers will not accept being lumped into a general category of police officer. They are highly paid, highly trained professionals. Being called officer reminds them of the local PD making $10/hr, out of shape, food stains on his uniform, filthy patrol car, etc. Yes, it's all about their egos. If you get pulled over, even though you're trying to be polite and respectful, do not call one "officer." Trooper, Sir or Ma'am is just fine if you expect a warning.
