Erik Larson in his very interesting book, The Devil in the White City, explains how Dr. H. H. Holmes became the serial killer during the World's Fair in Chicago in 1893.

In 1893. It was called the World's Columbian Exposition. This was followed in 1933 by the Century of Progress International Exposition.

Well, the book was pretty amazing covering both a serial killer and a genius who designed the entire Chicago Worlds Fair in only two years. But I would have to say the climax of the book is the arrest of Holmes, the killer, as we watch throughout the book his deprivations mount. On the other hand, I was really swept up by Burnham's struggles to get the entire White City up in time. I suppose it depends on which character you were most drawn to while reading the book.

An early form of Cracker Jacks were sold at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. This early form consisted of popcorn, molasses, and peanuts and was called "Candied Popcorn and Peanuts".
The admission prices for the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, Illinois were $0.50 for Adults and $0.25 for Children.
It was demolished after the World's Fair. A smaller, permanent replica was erected in Jackson Park to mark the 25th anniversary of the fair.
