Chief justice of Supreme court is appointed by president of india
The President of India appoints Chief Justice of High Court on advice of the Supreme Court.

There has been no female Chief Justice of India till date. Justice Ruma Pal, who was appointed as the judge of the Supreme Court on 28 January 2000 could have been the first female Chief Justice of India had she been appointed two days earlier. However on 26 January 2000, Justice Y.K Sabarwal was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court and thus he acquired seniority over her by two days and went on to become the Chief Justice of India.

As per Article 124 of Indian Constitution ; Every Judge Including Chief Justice of Supreme Court is appointed by the President after consultation with the Judges of the Supreme Court Indiaand of the High Courts. Generally the senior most justice in line takes up the post of the Chief Justic. Generally the name of the senior most Justice is recommended by the out going Chief Justice to the President.
