Where can you find information about David E George who claimed to be John Wilkes Booth in 1903?

Answer There is much controversy whether David E George was actually John Wilkes Booth. Autopsy proved that John Booth has a pin in his leg (broken earlier in his life) and also dental records (there are no indications as to where John Wilkes Booth is buried. On the other side of the coin there were just too many similarities and too much David E George knew and many of them believed he was John Wilkes Booth. David E George's body was used in circus' for spectators and the myth would have it that any circus owner that owned the mummified corpse lost everything they owned and those that transported the body had bad luck or even death. Myth or reality? For more information on David E. George and John St. Helen see the last chapter of Lincoln, Davis, and Booth.

What is the name of John Wilkes Booth's escape partner?

Of the 5 or 6 other co-conspirators, only David Herold accompanied Booth on his 12 day ordeal through swamp and forest and finally to a barn and death. Herold, several years younger than Booth, certainly got in with the wrong group. He surrendered to Union officers 12 days after their flight from Ford's Theater, Washington DC, April 14, 1865. Herold was hung with the rest of the gang after a military trial in Washington. Buried in DC, his body was later released to his family for burial in his family's plot. Was David E George really John Wilkes Booth?

Actually there is no concrete evidence that David E. George was John Wilkes Booth. While there was some evidence, such as similar broken bones (leg and thumb) keep in mind that when the Booth family finally received the body it was examined and the physician compared dental records and verified that the remains was Booth. Of course this was not a precise science then as it is today. There was no xray but rather just the visual examination and memory of the doctor. Also, the man who was shot and killed in that barn in Virginia was wearing a pin in his undershirt which was known that Booth wore. This was not a commonly known fact. The theory is that when Booth realized he left some personal items in the swamps he asked another man to go and retrieve them. The theory is that while the man was gone to retrieve these items, Booth took off and it was this man who was shot in the barn. This theory could explain why the man had Booth's items in his possession but would NOT explain why the man was wearing the pin that only Booth was known to wear. The only concrete way would be to find the body of George, which was mummified and do a DNA. We will probably never know for sure. Makes for a great story though.
